New evacuations ordered as Thomas Fire spreads in Santa Barbara County

Josh Pangan didn’t want to leave anything to chance with his wife, Angela, being 25 weeks pregnant with their first child. With their two French bulldogs, they left their home in Carpinteria (Santa Barbara County) on Thursday to escape the smoke that filled their neighborhood. The couple took refuge in a hotel in Goleta, about 20 miles northwest of Carpinteria. And for three days, they breathed fresh air. By Sunday, Angela and Josh Pangan were getting ready to leave again as the Thomas Fire, the most destructive of the five major wildfires burning in Southern California, grew by nearly 20,000 acres, resulting in new evacuation orders for parts of Santa Barbara County.
