Tillerson’s role: A deputy assistant to President Trump dismissed statements by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson regarding a military response to North Korea as “simply nonsensical.” The remarks by Trump aide Sebastian Gorka to the BBC came after media criticism that the Trump administration — the president as well as Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis — had offered mixed messages as tension rose over North Korea’s nuclear program. An Oregon rule change allowing people who don’t identify with their gender to instead mark X’’ on their driver’s licenses or state ID cards has been used by more than 250 people since the change enacted on July 3. 3 Murder conviction: A reputed gang member who beat a murder charge decades ago and went on to land a job as a police officer was convicted Thursday of the 30-year-old killing after DNA evidence put him at the crime scene.
