All-Star Game Eavesdrops from workout day

The buzz from Monday’s workout day on the eve of the 88th All-Star Game at Marlins Park in Miami: Bellinger hit 15 homers in the opening round, three more than his dad, Clay, hit over an entire career. “I like Giancarlo’s Home Run Derby swing sometimes more than his seasonal swing,” said his Miami manager, Don Mattingly. Bryce Harper’s idea for deciding All-Star lineups: a draft by the two players who receive the most votes from fans. Harper envisioned a scenario in which he’d face pitcher Max Scherzer, his Washington teammate. Commissioner Rob Manfred mentioned three cities — Montreal, Mexico City (or another site in Mexico) and Charlotte, N.C. — as possible expansion sites but reiterated that expansion is off the table until the A’s and Rays resolve their ballpark issues.
