After spate of Oakland fires, state law allowing wood framing comes under new scrutiny

After a four alarm fire engulfed a seven-story housing and retail project on Friday, new scrutiny is being placed on a 2008 law that allows buildings under eight stories to use wood framing as long as they have two floors of concrete below, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Columnists Matier & Ross on Sunday pointed out that the wood framing method leaves buildings much more vulnerable than the pre-2008 standard, which called for noncombustible exterior walls.
