Josh Phegley returns to A’s, Sean Manaea to pitch Monday

Josh Phegley came off the seven-day concussion disabled list Friday, giving the A’s three catchers, at least until left-hander Sean Manaea returns from the DL on Monday to start at Seattle. Phegley said he had concussion symptoms for only two days after taking a foul ball off the mask at Minnesota and has felt fine since. Bruce Maxwell appeared as if he might be the next catcher on the concussion list after getting dazed by a foul ball off the mask Wednesday, but he has passed every concussion test, including impact tests Friday that measured his ability to remember photos and patterns. Maxwell turned to Texas catcher Jonathan Lucroy for advice Friday; Lucroy has had several lengthy stints on the DL because of concussions. “Lucroy told me the best mask on the market when it comes to concussion prevention and testing is the one he has, a new model made with magnesium and he uses bigger pads that cover his mouth, too, because when he got hit last year, the bar hit him in the mouth,” Maxwell said. [...] I called All-Star (equipment company) right away and ordered one. Maxwell was expected to be sent to Triple-A Nashville upon Phegley’s return, but because right-hander Jharel Cotton was demoted Thursday in advance of Manaea’s return, there is an extra roster spot, giving manager Bob Melvin a four-man bench. With three catchers, Melvin can pinch-hit without taking the risk of having no catchers available in the event of an injury. “It allows me to make more moves in-game which we’re a little more comfortable with,” Melvin said. Manaea, who left his April 26 start after two innings with shoulder tightness, should be around the 90-pitch mark against the Mariners. Melvin said that reliever John Axford (shoulder) will make a rehab appearance with Triple-A Nashville on Saturday. Susan Slusser is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer. The A’s have been using Skittles, which they have redubbed “Hittles,” as a rally prop since a fan gave them some during spring training; Friday, the company sent several boxes of the candy to the clubhouse.
