A’s send Jharel Cotton to Triple-A Nashville

Cotton, 25, was optioned to Triple-A Nashville after allowing five homers in his past two starts and a career-high seven runs this week against the Angels “Jharel has pitched better than what his overall line shows,” general manager David Forst said. Even on Tuesday, his stuff was excellent as evidenced by the strikeouts; he just needs some more consistency with his performance. The bottom line is that we currently have six starters who are probably deserving of being in the big leagues; Jharel needs to continue to improve in Nashville so he’s ready when the next opportunity arises. Cotton’s departure clears a rotation spot for Sean Manaea, who will come off the DL on Sunday or Monday. Manaea has missed two starts with left shoulder tightness. Maxwell is potentially a candidate for the seven-day DL himself; he came out of Wednesday’s game early after taking a foul ball off the mask, but he passed the initial concussion protocol. Should the A’s demote Maxwell or put him on the DL, they could then dip into the Sounds’ roster for extra relief help or another bat. Cotton was obtained in the Josh Reddick/Rich Hill deal with the Dodgers last July and he put up a 2.15 ERA in five starts with Oakland last September. Oakland’s bullpen has worked 14 scoreless innings since Ryan Dull allowed a two-run homer Sunday, helping the A’s win conseucive series for the second time this season.
