Jazz’s Gobert injured against Clippers
April 15, 2017
Utah center Rudy Gobert sprained his left knee in the series opener against the host Los Angeles Clippers on the first play of the game. A Jazz spokesman says Gobert was taken from Staples Center to have an MRI exam for precautionary reasons. The fourth-year player from France was helped off the court, leaning on teammates George Hill and Boris Diaw as he went to the locker room. The matchup of Gobert and Clippers center DeAndre Jordan was expected to be a key to the best-of-seven series. LeBron James scored 32 points and host Cleveland, looking to flip a switch after a shaky and streaky regular season, began the postseason by escaping with a win. After the game, Miles sat at his locker in full uniform for 30 minutes before Larry Bird, the team’s president of basketball operations, came in and patted him on the shoulder. Playing in his 200th playoff game, James added 13 assists and six rebounds while winning his 18th consecutive first-round game. [...] it was anything but easy as the Cavs, who had a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter, had to withstand a strong comeback by the Pacers. Kyrie Irving added 23 points and Kevin Love had 17 for Cleveland, which has won 12 straight playoff games at home. The Raptors have lost the opening game in eight consecutive playoff series. Boston Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas’ younger sister, 22-year-old Chyna Thomas, was killed Saturday morning in a car accident in Federal Way, Wash., the Tacoma News Tribune reported. The one-car accident occurred on Interstate 5 about 15 miles northeast of the Thomas’ hometown of Tacoma.
